Walking today: 3.8km
Back to France on New Year's Eve having taken the last ferry leaving Portsmouth in 2014 - grander than it sounds! This was our twelfth channel crossing of the year, the same as 2013 but significantly less than our record year of 2010 when we managed 22 crossings.
The news was full of the ferry fire in the Mediterranean which tragically claimed a number of lives. The ship involved, the Norman Atlantic, was the sister ship to the Norman Voyager which briefly operated LD Lines Portsmouth-Le Havre route. All our 22 crossings in 2010 were with LD Lines but this boat was so terrible it prompted us to move over to Brittany Ferries who we've used ever since.
Somehow we had yet again managed to come back with a car loaded to the roof - again I was thankful we weren't stopped at UK customs. "Could you tell me what you have in the vehicle sir" - "Everything except the kitchen sink officer, that came back on the last trip".
We did have a large collection of bare-root roses from Peter Beales Roses in the car and on New Year's Day they went into their new temporary home in the potager whilst we prepare their permanent homes.
