November already - two months since we started. There have been some big changes in the barn - though sometimes I feel as if they aren't so visible to people on the outside of the project - or the building. I got this feeling this week showing round Jean-Claude from along the road when he dropped by to drop off some rooted Mimosa plants he'd taken from his garden (we'd admired the tree in July when we'd gone round for an apéro that turned into an impromptu dinner). The work in the last month has concentrated on the inside - Adam's constructed the new doorway from the barn into the lean-to (the future utility room) and the joists have been installed to support the first floor.
It's been hard work mating the new straight wood into the old existing and definitely not straight existing beams and timber.
Some of the joists have been of epic proportions, these three were 6.5 metres long and came back on our trailer thanks to the forklift skills of Joel from Soulaine sawmills.
The big event in October was the birth of Ambrose, Adam and Amanda's son, on 18th October. Adam's nights are a little disturbed now so we are taking extra care with all measurements ;o)
Next week the terrassement company will be on site for two weeks to install the new Fosse Septique and dig out the barn floor (a mixture of concrete and terre battu at present) and lay a new reinforced concrete floor.
This will be a big change that will be visible to visitors ....
This blog is about our experience living in France as we complete the renovation of our property, battle with French bureaucracy and enjoy living in this stunning environment. La Basse Cour is in southern Morbihan in the Brittany area of the west of France and we have a 1960 house, a 1798 stone barn and 6000 m2 of land.
